Happy New Year!! A fresh start, a clean slate, a renewed sense of self… maybe a resolution or two. One thing that seems to be a recurring theme I am hearing is getting organized for a fresh new year. Perhaps many of us have been watching the latest home organization show on Netflix or following our favorite influencer on Instagram as she declutters her pantry… Organizing never looked so good.
In the world of real estate, decluttering and organizing your home will go a long way in appealing to potential buyers. When your home is clutter-free this enables buyers to focus on the actual home instead of your collection of Precious Moments Figurines. If you are planning on selling your home this year, why not get a jump start on this process!
I like my home in order… much to the dismay of my family. Don’t get me wrong, at any given moment, I have the entire 1500 piece Lego set on my living room floor, or a craft project sitting there unfinished for weeks on end. But there are times when I like my home showing worthy.
The Decluttering Golden Rule
One thing I have found to be helpful with eliminating clutter around the house is living by the rule “don’t put it down, put it away”. Same goes for the kitchen. I love doing the dishes…. Said no mom EVER! Especially when my kids use a new glass every. single. time they get a drink of water. Or a glass of milk. Or a sip of water. Or some orange juice. Or another sip of water. I could do this all day long. Because that’s what they do ALL DAY LONG. So, instead of mama going a little more cray, I made this super easy, but highly necessary beverage holder out of a piece of reclaimed wood with everyone’s initials on it. So, when they get a new glass in the morning, they can place it on their “initial” and use it the rest of the day. Which I’d like to say works 100% of the time. But I can’t. Because gosh dangit there’s always that random glass that is sitting there lonely on the counter that no one claims.
Don't put it down, put it away.
Now of course there are times in which a new glass is warranted throughout the day. Like if we have ribs for dinner. Or if someone is sick… you know, germs and all, blah, blah, blah. Or when your child touches the backyard dog poop shovel to their tongue on a dare. Yes, it happened. Said child did not receive bedtime kisses for a week from this mama. Anyways, if you’re looking for a simple solution to reduce clutter in your kitchen, make one. It’s easy!
